Sportsmen's Marathon Team

Meet the Sportsmen’s Marathon Team

Congratulations to the 2024 Inaugural Sportsmen’s Boston Marathon Team!
We look forward to cheering you on in April!

Tommy Grosskopf

What do you do with your day? Are you employed, a student, retired?
I am currently a mechanical engineering student at Northeastern University. My engineering coursework along with my marathon training keeps me plenty busy!

How long have you been running?
I have only been running for about 6 months. Last July, my roommate Alek poked his head into my room and asked me if I wanted to run a half marathon in October. Although I had no prior experience in distance running, I replied “sure”. In training for this half marathon I fell in love with distance running, and the rest is history.

What made you want to run for Sportsmen’s?
My family has been involved in Sportsmen’s for a number of years now. I love Sportsmen’s mission to give underprivileged kids an opportunity to excel both academically and athletically. As a Massachusetts native attending college in Boston, the cause feels close to home.

If you could time travel back anywhere – where would it be? And why?
If I could time travel back anywhere, I’d probably choose to go to ancient Greece. I’ve always been fascinated by super advanced civilizations of the past, and I’d love to see the engineering and architectural marvels of ancient Greece being built firsthand.

Who is your favorite athlete of all time? And why are they your favorite?
As a diehard Boston sports fan, my favorite athlete of all time has got to be Tom Brady. Growing up in New England during the Patriots dynasty, he was such an inspirational leader and the unequivocal GOAT.

If you could have dinner with anyone, who would it be? And why?
If I could have dinner with anyone, it would be a member of the Beatles. I am a fan of lots of different types of music, but I regard the Beatles as one of the most revolutionary rock bands of all time. I’d love to hear the stories of their rise in the ’60s and could certainly benefit from a few tips on guitar from them.

Why should someone support your run?
Because all of us marathoners are working our tails off running in this 20 degree weather!
