Meet the Sportsmen’s Marathon Team

Congratulations to the 2024 Inaugural Sportsmen’s Boston Marathon Team!
We look forward to cheering you on in April!

Nina Rodgers

What do you do with your day? Are you employed, a student, retired?
I am a mechanical engineering supervisor at a startup called Form Energy! We focus on building cost-effective, multi-day storage systems that enable a clean and reliable electric grid.

How long have you been running?
I have only been running for a year casually but started getting into races just about 6 months ago.

What made you want to run for Sportsmen’s (STEC)?
Growing up I was extremely uncomfortable with myself physically, socially, and mentally, so in every way basically. I was introduced into tennis at the pinnacle of feelings, with hopes of just staying busy, but it turned into so much more than that. The actual sport of tennis, the instructors, and the team taught me social skills within a team, the strength my body had that gave me confidence, and the strategic thinking and planning that gave me mental confidence. The aspects I learned in those times transformed me into a confident women and I use those skills to this day. I want every kid out there to have the opportunity to grow and take away skills and confidence that tennis, the instructors, and teachers can offer at Sportsmen’s, just as I did.

If you could time travel back anywhere – where would it be? And why?
I would love to go back to ancient Greece! The architecture! The histories of the greek gods and goddesses like Zeus and Apollo! Aristotle! Socrates! And all of the rest of the incredible philosophers. The art was incredible. I would have loved to see it all take place around me.

Who is your favorite athlete of all time? And why are they your favorite?
Kevin Garnett. I idolized him growing up in Minnesota and continued as we both came to the east coast. All professional athletes have passion for their game but not like Kevin Garnett. His energy and love for what he does was contagious.

If you could have dinner with anyone, who would it be? And why?
Neil Armstrong. I am absolutely crazy in love with all things aerospace engineering. Not only was he the first on the moon but he was an incredible aerospace engineer and professor. His skills, accomplishments, etc are incredible and I would love to have met him and grow to be like him in my respective engineering career.

Why should someone support your run?
This is a dream for me to run the Boston Marathon, and to do it in honor of a charity that I align myself with so much makes my heart very full. I am doing this for all the kids at Sportsmen’s and I am doing this for myself. The training is hard, it’s pushing me not only physically but mentally and I can only do it because of the support from all the people I love + so many more. Someone should support my run because it’s for the overall theme of pushing to be your best self in all ways, no matter if it’s for a long 26.2 miles or for learning how to read and serve a tennis ball.
